Geek vs. Nerd

I had to explain this to some of my classmates when one called me a ‘nerd’ and I corrected him to say that I was a ‘geek’. This is my own opinion, and please feel free to agree or disagree below.

Geek: a socially comfortable individual who likes weird shit and is not ashamed of it. Weird shit can include, but is not limited to, Sci-Fi, Science, ancient languages (yays!), history, technology, and music. Examples include the guys from Mythbusters, Vin Diesel, and Miracle Ed.

Nerd: a socially uncomfortable person (introvert) who likes weird shit and doesn’t want other folks to know about it. They tend to not make eye contact and speak haltingly, even when doing simple things like ordering food at Subway. Weird shit is as above for geek, with Sci-Fi replaced by Fantasy, Science replaced with Math, and the rest remaining the same except music, which goes away. Examples include everyone from Revenge of the Nerds, the kid from Head of the Class, and all of Sean’s friends (I kid).

  1. geek and nerd are interchangeable terms of endearment for me, geek possibly shading more toward the technological and or concrete while nerd might be more theoretical and or esoteric in their expression.

dork on the other hand is a is a term of derision reserved for those without redeeming qualities that would otherwise make their curious nerdy modes of expression acceptable.

i could change my mind tomorrow.

  2. Geeks bite heads off chickens.

Ed is still a good example. 😉

  3. the character on head of the class was named “arvid”. one time, at a ricky gervais show, i met billy connolly.

  4. See, I think a dork is a nerd without the smarts.

  5. i have never bit the head off of a chicken. the situation has never presented itself. i don’t think i have ever held a live chicken. with my allergies i could quite easily make a case for self defense anyway.

  6. Given your allergies, it might be considered attempted suicide…

  7. maybe they have a chinese featherless chicken or something.

  8. you know, for kids:

  9. Tremendous.

  10. i’d like to see that thing mated with a naked mole rat.

  11. You seem to bee of taget by my assesment. Here are some errors in your assumtion highlighted in CAPS:
Geek: a socially comfortable individual who likes weird shit [TECH/SCI-FI/GENRE/COMPUTER]and is not ashamed of it[SHAME DOESN’T ENTER IN TO EITHER TERM]. Weird shit can include, but is not limited to, Sci-Fi, Science, ancient languages (yays!){INTEREST IN ANCIENT LANGS. & THE HUMANITIES WOULD BE A NERD TRAIT], history, technology, and music[MUSIC CAN BE EITHER AS WELL]. Examples include the guys from Mythbusters, Vin Diesel[NO FUCKING WAY], and Miracle Ed.

Nerd: a socially uncomfortable person (introvert)[NOT NECISARRILY0 who likes weird shit and doesn’t want other folks to know about it[MOST NERD NOT ONLY DON’T WANT TO HIDE THINGS BUT THEY INSIST THAT THEY TELL YOU ABOUT THEIR INTERESTS]. They tend to not make eye contact and speak haltingly, even when doing simple things like ordering food at Subway[WHAT YOU ARE DESCIBING IS CALLED A “SPAZ”. Weird shit is as above for geek, with Sci-Fi replaced by Fantasy[SCI-FI IS AN IMPORTANT PART OF ALL NERD-LIFE], Science replaced with Math[SCIENCE IS ALWAYS MOREIMORTANT THAN MATH- MATH AGAIN IS MORE IN THE SPAZ REALM], and the rest remaining the same except music, which goes away. Examples include everyone from Revenge of the Nerds, the kid from Head of the Class, and all of Sean’s friends (I kid).[ ];-0 ]
    PEACE

  12. Sorry, the first sentance should have read: “You seem to be off target. By my assesment here are some errors in your assumtion highlighted in CAPS” Perhaps if I weren’t such a NERD I wouldn’t feel a need to correct my pointless posts on blogs.

  13. Geeks are circus side show FREAKS that bite the heads off of chickens. Think of the gimp from “Pulp Fiction.”

A Nerd is someone who embraces technology and uses it for the betterment of themselves and others. Think of Jimmy from “Pulp Fiction.”

  14. Geeks are freaking out about this nerd-filled film and the changes being made to it in the name of palatability.
