True Hero

Say what you will about Steve Dunleavy, but that man can write a column. This one is about Chris Engeldrum, who was a member of the FDNY, NYPD, and United States Army:

[He] joined the Army in 1986 and served as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne in the first Gulf War.

He joined the NYPD in 1997, but after two years he was accepted by “his first love,” the Fire Department…

On 9/11, he rushed downtown with his fire company, arriving just as the first tower was falling… Later, he helped raise the first flag at Ground Zero on a lamppost.
