Credit Repoht
In accordance with a new Federal law, there is now a site where you can get a free credit report from the three major credit reporting agencies once a year. Unfortunately for you east coasters, you have to wait until September 1st, but I (as a kama’aina) got to check mine this morning, which I did at 12:01 AM EST. Experian and TransUnion were on the ball, but Equifax wanted me to send something in by mail, so fuck them.
I’m glad I did it. There are several mistakes and surprises, just like MSNBC.com said there would be. Firstly, I owed $109 to a rental car agency from my senior year of college. That was a bit of a surprise, as I hadn’t heard about it in the past 6 years and it never affected my ability to get credit or a loan. Second, I am apparently Also Known As Shannon M. Corcoran. All I can say is, thanks for being fiscally conservative, Shannon. Our credit is pretty good. I also had one or two credit cards being shown as open when I closed them years ago.
I sprang the extra $5.95 for a TransUnion credit score, which was 830, apparently better than 70% of folks. The negatives affecting my credit score boiled down to “doesn’t use enough big credit cards or carry a big balance”. Ah, well. Call me cheap.
